Use and Technique

When using a fire extinguisher a simple acronym is helpful in remembering the steps.

PASS

The PASS technique ensures that the fire remains under control, and in some circumstances that it doesn't reignite (like a gas fire).

If a fire cannot be put out or brought under control it is time that you leave the area and evacuate the building.

SOME THINGS TO REMEMBER

  • Never let the fire get between you and your exit
  • Always pull the fire alarm, or call 911, before attempting to extinguish the flames
  • If it can't be put out in 30 seconds LEAVE, your safety is more important than being a hero.

TRAINING
Training is extremely important when using an extinguisher. Many classes are available and certain workplaces will train you in the proper use.
